Consequently, the company does animal testing whereas other companies that are 100% cruelty free refused to sell in China.

Since animals are tested, we expect more transparency and metrics such as the number of animals tested (total and by species), percentage of animals killed (all species and by species), percentage of animals saved or rehabilitated (all species and by species), list of countries where animals are tested and percentage of tested animals by country.

Among positive points we notice: the company claims being “the most active company working alongside the Chinese authorities and scientists for over 10 years to have alternative testing methods recognized, and permit the cosmetic regulation to evolve towards a total and definite elimination of animal testing” (see sources). Besides, the company has developed alternatives to animal testing such as “Episkin, which produces and sells validated reconstructed skin models » in 2013. Moreover, the company does research with the University of Central Florida on microfluidic systems with organs-on-a-chip, “ reinnervating the reconstructed human epidermis in collaboration with the IDOR research institute in Brazil” (p 17 of 2016 registration document).

Vegan product

According to the 2019 annual report, L’Oréal has launched one new vegan product Fructis Hair Food, “without any ingredient or derivative of animal origin”.

Final rating

In spite of some efforts, one vegan product launched, ban of animal-hair brushes, the amount of tested animals is too significant due to the sales in China that requires animal experimentation. Massive animal suffering associated to some animal-welfare actions corresponds to the “Vegan non compliant” rating and “-1” score.

BENEFICIAL ASPECTS: one vegan product launched, ban of animal-hair brushes, some alternatives to animal testing and working on the elimination of animal testing in China

HARMFUL ASPECTS: significant animal testing permitted due to high sales volume in China; nondisclosure of metrics related to animal testing

Sources:

2019 annual report

2016 registration document

2019 CSR report

L’Oréal in China

http://www.loreal.com/sustainability/l’or%C3%A9al-answers/the-question-of-animal-testing

https://www.crueltyfreekitty.com/news/loreal-animal-testing-not-cruelty-free/

L’Oréal Group bans animal-hair brushes

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-01-16/ending-china-animal-tests-is-salve-for-big-beauty-quicktake-q-a

L’OREAL Rated for year 2020: Vegan non compliant Score: -1 Industry: Household & Personal Products Positive news: 2021 January : L’Oréal…

["post-1365","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry","pmpro-has-access
["GET
